In Pingyao, we meet people riding bicycles, walking on narrow paved alleyways, waiting in front of coloured gates. We chat with antiques shop owners, eat delicious meals prepared in the courtyard behind the restaurant.

In Lijiang, local minorities sell art craft, restaurants propose wonderful dishes from the local gastronomy.

Curved roof tops, a river passing through the village, gushing canals, a delightful maze of cobbled streets, rickety old wooden buildings… every single element of the decorum makes these cities be a perfect place to tune out for a while, in a nice and relaxed atmosphere.

Sacred mountains

Climbing the sacred mountains, getting off tracks, far from tourists herds, requires an extra effort, but it is really worth doing, in order to catch a glimpse of the famous summits, hidden in a sea of clouds.

We take our time observing a landscape we got familiar with, thanks to Chinese photographs and paintings. We really enjoy discovering all the details of an impressive panorama, admiring all the blue, green and grey tones of the landscape, and even smiling when it starts raining, a rain that arrives just in time to magnify a wonderful and rare scenic view.

Karst scenery

A river, long wooden boats, men with a hat, clouds and fog, and behind, a surprising landscape: gorgeous limestone pinnacles which seem to have suddenly appeared out of the ground.

We discover this unique scenery in Guilin and Yangshuo. Riding through the countryside brings us closer to an outstanding nature: rice fields surrounded by these vertical hills.

Life goes on slowly here. There are some farmers in their field, guiding their buffalo. Women do their washing in the river, we pass through deserted hamlets. It is a pleasure for us to spend some days here and take our time, following the rhythm of the inhabitants.
