Meanwhile, Beijing is a cultural city, where every historical site is amazingly big.

You could spend hours walking through the Forbidden City, wandering in the Summer Palace Gardens, discovering the Temple of Heaven, being curious about temples and pagodas, getting used to the Chinese way of riding on Tiananmen Square.

Each site has its own history, architecture and aesthetic, but all have in common to offer calm moments after long days of walking through this huge city full of noise, dust and pollution.

Historical sites: bigger, nicer, and touristy!

163 hours by train, 47 hours by bus, 12 hours by plane, 4 days in a boat…

China is a huge territory, and what is true for Beijing is also true in the rest of the country: all touristy and historical sites are really huge.

Grottoes carved into the rocks and home for thousand buddhas ; temples as large as villages and statues as tall as small buildings ; an impressive terracotta army of 6000 life-sized warriors ; a Buddha carved into a cliff face, measuring an overwhelming 71 meters high… all sites are huge and it is better taking time to discover them !

Huge quantities of Chinese tourists visit these places, and it is sometimes difficult to concentrate when you have to share a place with herds of noisy and spitting people following a rushing guide with a flag and a megaphone.

Happily, we are sometimes lucky to be almost alone during a visit and this brings magical moments: one of these unique days was when we climbed the Great Wall, a kid dream that couldn't be disappointed.

Watching the Wall and its guard towers running along the mountain is astonishing. We could almost imagine Genghis Khan's Mongol army suddenly getting out of the bush and attacking the place… as Genghis Khan supposedly said, "the strength of a wall depends on the courage of those defending it".
