In Johannesburg, we visit the famous Soweto township. A somehow touristy tour since it can only be organized with a guide… The occasion to discover houses built of nothing, prefabricated toilets outside the habitations, no running water nor electricity… Squatters, who build wherever they can, are never far from the wealthy elite living in comfortable bungalows of the "chic" areas of the township… In Soweto too, contrasts do exist!

We leave the township a bit frustrated having seen only a part of its life. However, visiting some of the places linked to the struggle against Apartheid is a good way to learn more about this part of the history of South Africa, and we can only be impressed by the courage and tenacity of the township's inhabitants.

Safari in the Kruger Park

After four days spent on a safari in the huge Kruger Park, looking for wild animals, we are now convinced of the interest of wildlife watching and animal games.

We get up every morning at five, for a very special emotion, watching wonderful sunrises. Then we are ready for exciting game drives, which last until the end of the day.

We see giraffes, zebras, impalas and steenboks quite often and are impressed by their grace. We normally meet groups of gnus, sometimes a family of warthogs, hardly few kudus. We have the privilege of watching an elephant herd playing in water ; we are very lucky to come across wild dogs ; and what a surprise to fall face to face with a rhino!

At night, we hear buffalos on their way to the waterhole near the campsite. We are curious, and so are the hippos, getting their heads out of the water to look at those humans when we arrive to watch them…

Every animal is a great surprise to us, and moreover, we experience the pleasure of nature, wildlife, fire camps and barbecues in a really cool atmosphere. A nice way to reconcile with the bush...
