Tibetan toilets...

Have you ever heard about Chinese public toilets? You know, toilets without a door (anyway, even when there is a door, people leave it opened), a deep hole digged into the ground, a space that is separated from the next one by a low demising wall (when there is one), or better, a large common hole going from one side of the shelter to the other, with water running through it and taking away the contents that were poured, a nice way to see running under oneself the neighbours' misdeeds, waiting for one's own...

Of course, there is no paper nor water, sometimes a bucket with water, for rinsing. And of course, no light, which is good : with no light into the room, artwork can not be seen, even if it can still be smelled.

We never got accustomed to the extreme dirtiness of Chinese toilets, but we adapted ourselves, and we now have stories to tell... And everytime, we thought that the worse was behind us...

WE WERE WRONG : we have found worse than the Chinese public toilets! TIBETAN TOILETS!!! After two months travelling through China, we couldn't think we would travel one day in a region wich would make Chinese toilets look comfortable and pleasant...

In Tibet, ALL toilets are dirty and malodorous, not only the public ones : even the shared toilets of some hotels are unhealthy. The dirtiness is at its peak, with often difficulties for the visitor to find an empty place around the hole where to put his feet...
